[ARCHIVED] AZTech receives award for traffic signal innovation

AZTech Regional Partnership receives ITS AZ Award for traffic signal innovation

AZTech Regional Partnership awarded best use of Intelligent Transportation Systems product

The AZTech Regional Partnership was recently awarded Best Use of an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Industry Product at the Intelligent Transportation Society of Arizona’s 24th Annual Conference for the development of a centrally hosted software platform for Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM).  The AZTech Regional Partnership, under the leadership of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), has facilitated research and pilot implementation of ATSPM technology in the greater Phoenix area.

AZTech is the first in the nation to develop this innovative approach for implementing ATSPM in a region with multiple local jurisdictions.  This technology will benefit drivers across the region by increasing operational safety, saving money, improving customer service and improving intersection operations.

Traditional traffic signal issues are brought to light through citizen complaints, resulting in agency professionals reactively responding. With ATSPMs, signal data can be used to proactively monitor how effective the signal is at keeping traffic flowing.   Because AZTech has already developed a central repository for data sharing, this eliminates the need for local jurisdictions to install and maintain a server which might not be feasible for resource-strained agencies.

AZTech’s pilot ATSPM implementation phase was deployed with a central server as part of the Regional Archived Data System (RADS) in MCDOT, Tempe, Peoria, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Mesa and ADOT.
