In November of 2002 voters passed Proposition 202 to allow
gaming compacts between the State of Arizona and native American tribes. The Proposition required tribes to share 12% of their revenue for government services, including public safety, mitigation of the impacts of gaming, economic development, education, transportation, and health services (
A.R.S. § 5-601.02).
All tribes require a partnership with a local government for their gaming grants. Government Relations coordinates the Maricopa County support by processing the applications for approval by the Board of Supervisors, submitting applications to the tribes, and passing funding through to grant recipients.
